Swiss mountains at their best... with the Matterhorn in the background

Here we are in Switzerland to discover the Valais province famous for its many peaks over 4000m, including the very famous Matterhorn.
Starting at the heart of the Valais vineyards, exploring their amazing irrigation channels running between hills and valleys. The two first days are spent in a charming hotel to relax facing a magnificent Alpine panorama.
Next is the Val d'Anniviers, a traditional high valley at the foot of the "crown of 4000s". Quiet, clean air, breathtaking scenery... a pearl of the Swiss Alps.
Zermatt, the Swiss alpine capital, finally welcomes us in its setting of majestic mountains: The Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, Castor and Pollux are the stars of our alpine getaway.

THE PRICE

The price includes

  • Organisation and booking fees, guiding by a qualified and insured mountain leader;
  • All meals including picnic lunch and simple snacks during the day;
  • Accommodation in hotels in twin/double rooms (or triple room for individuals) and tourist taxes;
  • Baggage transport between accommodation;
  • Bus transfers and lifts (except on Day 6).

The price does not include:

  • The cable car on Day 6 (Schwartzsee, approx 30€);
  • The return journey to the departure point (Zermatt-Sion) if you came by car (approx 44€ by train); 
  • Personal expenses (drinks, touristic visits, etc.);
  • Access to termal baths in Anzère ( approx. 25 CHF);
  • Cancellation insurance;
  • Your return journey from home to the point of departure/end point.

L’itinéraire jour après jour...

Day 1

WELCOME - BISSE D'AYENT

Meeting Sunday at 1.30pm at Sion train station
Welcome meeting by your guide. Departure around 1.45pm by local bus for the hamlet of Arbaz. After passing through the hamlet, the path follows the Ayent bisse, which is followed up to Anzère. Depending on the weather, there is the option of taking the Clavau bisse, which rises gently along the drystone walls amid the Valais vineyards. Arrival at the hotel around 5pm to enjoy the hotel sauna or the nearby Anzère terms. Check-in for 2 nights at the hotel, facing the Valais mountains.
3 hour walk / Elevation: +320m

Day 2

BARRAGE DE TZEUZIER - BISSE DE SION DE D'AYENT
Departure from the hotel to the Tzeuzier dam. Option to walk around the lake depending on the fitness level of the group. Descent via the amazing Bisse of Sion and Ayen (historic irrigation channel), where the spectacular remains of the ancient waterways can be seen. Return to the hotel for a sauna or a tour of the village wine cellars.
5 hour walk / Elevation: +400m -400m
1.5 hour walk/ Elevation: +/-150m for the lake tour

Day 3

LAC DE MOIRY - COL DE TSATE 
Minibus transfer to the Anniviers valley (45 mins). Depart from the end of the blue-green Lac de Moiry, and cross between the two beautiful glacial lakes of Chateaupré, the outlets of the enormous Lac de Moiry glacier. Climb up to the wild west bank, skirting Lake Bayena and the Lauché mountain pasture, beneath a crown of peaks over 3500m high. Optional ascent to the Col de Tsaté. Descent to the village of Grimentz along the Gougra river. Possibility of descent from the dam bylocal bus. Check-in for 2 nights at the Grimentz hotel.
4.5 hour walk / Elevation: +300m -950m
2 hour walk / Elevation: +/- 320m

Day 4

BENDOLLA - LAKE LONA
Ascent via the Bendolla cable car. Cross under the pointe de Lona to the wild high plateau of Lona and its lakes. Optional ascent to Sex de Marinda (2906 m). Descent to the emerald lake of Moiry, whose beautiful colour comes from the serpentine rocks that surround it. Transfer by local bus to the hotel.
5 hour walk / Elevation: +700m -550m (+/-100m via Sex de Marinda)

Day 5

EUROPAWEG - ZERMATT  
Transfer to Taschalp (1.45 hour transfer). Balcony trail overlooking the valley of Zermatt, with the Matterhorn and its giant glaciers in view. Descent through the pasture hamlets to Zermatt. Night in a hotel in the centre of Zermatt.
4 hour walk / Elevation: +250m -900m

Day 6

SCHWARZSEE - ZMUTT
Ascent by cable car to Schwarzsee, at 2583 m. The descent follows the imposing Matterhorn north face, then reaches the alpine villages... don' miss a visit to the wooden village of Zmutt, with its beautiful, sun-scorched barns.
4.5 hour walk / Elevation: -850m (Schwarzsee)

End of the hike around 3pm at Zermatt train station.  
A taxi transfer may be orgnaised by your mountain leader for those requiring transport from Zermatt to Sion (optional).

The trip

LEVEL **

Elevation: +400 to 800m approximately per day.
Walking time: 3 to 5 hours per day.
Type of trek: mountain routes without technical difficulty, accessible to most active people. The walks along the irrigation channels are selected to suit the group. Also, in good weather conditions some more challenging variants may be proposed.

You have to be in a general good fitness level. Please practice a cardio sport such as hiking, running, cycling. Your physical preparation will enable you to enjoy your trek to the maximum.

GUIDING

Number in a group between 6 and 8 people supervised by a qualified professional mountain leader. To thank your guide, it is usual to tip him at the end of the trek, according to your satisfaction. It is not mandatory but, it is very appreciated.

TRANSPORT

Each day, transfers to the departure point will be made with public transport or ski lifts.
Baggage transport between accommodation is provided by private taxi.

ACCOMMODATION

2 nights in 3-star hotel and 3 nights in a 2-star hotel in twin/double rooms (or triple bedroom) with small sauna available by prior arrangement, except on Day 5.
The allocation of nights is subject to change depending on availability.

MEALS

Breakfast and dinner are provided in each accommodation.
Picnics are included and are carefully prepared daily by your mountain leader, comprising a variety of healthy salads and local products. 

Please inform us about your food allergies and special diets at the time of booking.

We do our best to accommodate special diets (gluten-free, vegetarian, etc.). However, we encourage you to bring some additional products for your own picnics.

Practical information

ACCESS TO DEPARTURE POINT

Meeting Sunday at 1.30 pm at Sion train station

BY TRAIN 
Inbound: depart Gare de Lyon (Paris) at 8.18am arrive in Sion at 1.24pm.
Return: depart Zermatt at 4.37pm arrive in (Paris) Gare de Lyon at 11.42pm.
Times given are indicative and should be verified in a train station or on www.oui.sncf

BY CAR
Take the A40 motorway towards Geneva, then direction Martigny/Sion (Please note the mandatory sticker on Swiss motorways, to be bought at the border and at petrol stations.). Exit Sion Est.
Meet at the CFF train station in the centre of Sion. There is no free long-term parking in Sion. There are a few spaces along the railway line in rue Oscar-Bider / Sion / Valais (or outside the town, to be confirmed with your local guide). Covered pay car park: Rue du Scex 12, Sion (10 minutes' walk from CFF train station)

End point Saturday aound 3pm at the train station in Zermatt. Regular train departures to Sion or a group taxi may be organised by prior arrangement during the week with your mountain leader.

INSURANCE

In accordance with regulations, we are covered by Professional Liability Insurance. Under no circumstances, we can replace your personal civil liability.
The repatriation insurance EUROP ASSISTANCE that we offer is dedicated to French speaking people living in Europe. If it is not your case, we advise you to subscribe to another travel insurance which will cover you in case of injury and repatriation during your trek.

If you chose to take out repatriation insurance with EUROP ASSISTANCE whom we propose, Altitude Mont Blanc will only serve as an intermediary between the client and the insurer. We cannot influence either party. We adhere to strict conditions of sale. You are responsible for compliance with the reporting procedures of any incident.

BACKPACK

Bring a comfortable backpack of 30 to 40 litres for your personal belongings for the day (warm clothes, waterproofs, water, plate and cutlery for your picnic, sunscreen and your identity papers) and please keep a little room to carry a picnic and snacks.
